Nigerian Music Icon and Activist Onyeka Onwenu Passes Away


The Nigerian music industry mourns the loss of one of its brightest stars, Onyeka Onwenu, affectionately known as the ‘Elegant Stallion.’ The veteran singer and activist tragically passed away after collapsing during a performance at an event. Onwenu was rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Onyeka Onwenu was born on May 17, 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria. She began her illustrious career in the early 1980s and quickly became a beloved figure in the Nigerian music scene. Known for her soulful voice and powerful lyrics, Onwenu earned the moniker ‘Elegant Stallion’ for her grace and commanding stage presence.

Onwenu's music often addressed social issues, and she used her platform to advocate for women's rights and political reform. Her hit songs such as "One Love," "Bia Nulu," and "You and I" resonated with many, transcending generations and making her a household name.
In addition to her music career, Onyeka Onwenu was a talented actress and served as a journalist before delving into politics. She worked with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and produced several impactful documentaries. Onwenu also held public office as the Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and served as the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development.

Throughout her career, Onwenu received numerous awards and accolades for her contributions to the arts and her humanitarian efforts. Her legacy as a trailblazer in the Nigerian entertainment industry and her dedication to social causes will continue to inspire future generations.
