Celebrating an Icon: Prof Ebele Eko Marks 80th Birthday in Grand Style in Calabar


Today, in the heart of Calabar, the literary community and well-wishers gathered to celebrate the 80th birthday of the esteemed Professor Ebele Eko. Although her actual birthday falls on the 2nd of March, today's event marked a grand celebration of her life and contributions to literature and education.
Professor Eko, renowned for her extensive work in African literature and her commitment to academic excellence, has been an inspiration to countless students and colleagues. Her career spans decades of teaching, writing, and advocating for the importance of literature in understanding and shaping society.

Beyond her professional achievements, Professor Eko is cherished for her kind-hearted nature, her role as a very caring mother, and her dedication as a prayer warrior and a God-fearing woman. Her compassion and faith have touched the lives of many, providing support and guidance both personally and professionally.
The celebration was filled with heartfelt tributes, showcasing the profound impact she has had on so many lives. Guests enjoyed a vibrant program that included praises, musical performances, drama, and much more.

Amongst the guests at the colourful celebration at the Event 45 Centre, State Housing, Calabar, were the retired Anglican Archbishop of the Niger Delta Diocese, Bishop Tunde Adeleye (chairman of the occasion), former deputy governor of Cross River State, Prof. Evara Esu, amongst several others from across the country and beyond.
The Nnewi, Anambra State-born literary icon and retired professor of African Literature from the University of Calabar (UNICAL) is the author of multiple books.

The mother of five co-founded the Christian ministry, The Word Family, with her late husband, Dr. Ewa Eko, and is also the founder of the United Christian Women International (UCWI) in Calabar.

A 2014 biography, Mother of Multitudes, authored by journalist-activist Betty Abah, details her phenomenal life of distinctions and widespread impacts.

As we celebrate Professor Eko's 80 years of life, we also honor her enduring legacy to humanity. Her contributions continue to inspire and shape people.
